Diamond Platnumz’s manager Babu Tale says the award-winning musician has been arrested for posting videos to Instagram, which Tanzanian authorities deem to be promoting immorality.
Speaking to EDAILY on phone Tuesday afternoon, Babu Tale said the musician was summoned to Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam, where he recorded a statement and was, thereafter, apprehended.
“Reports that Diamond was arrested at his house are false. The singer was summoned to Central police post early Tuesday. He went and recorded a statement, and was, thereafter, held in the police cell. The police say that videos which he posted to his Instagram page last Sunday contravene public decency law. We hope he will be released soonest,” Babu Tale told EDAILY at 1:35pm Tuesday.
The ‘Sikomi’ hit-maker on April 15 posted to his Instagram page a video thread of him, separately, getting cozy with two women.
One of the women is an unidentified lady of Caucasian race, who Diamond was seen kissing passionately. The other woman was Diamond’s baby mama Hamisa Mobetto.
Diamond captioned the videos: “Ukiachwa, achika” to insinuate he has accepted fate, which left him separated from his ex-partner Zari Hassan.
In one of the threads in the video, Diamond is seen hugging and playing with Mobeto, who is heard telling the crooner: “Please give me child support”.
Diamond, responding to her, wrote: “She (Mobeto) says she wants child support, and I tell her to go report me to Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner [RC] Paul Makonda.”
In the Instagram video, it is speculated by a section of online users that Diamond Platnumz wanted to make his ex-partner, Zari Hassan, jealous.
Communications Minister Harrison Mwakwembe said in Parliament Tuesday that the images project acts that go against a law that bans such acts in Tanzania, the BBC reported.
Diamond was dumped by Zari on February 14, 2018, with Zari citing Diamond’s philandering habits as reasons for the split. They have two children together.
Tanzanian police are also looking for another Bongo musician known as Nandy over similar claims. Nandy was caught on camera getting intimate in bed with her lover Bilnas. It is alleged Bilnas leaked the video online.
Tanzanian president John Magufuli in December, 2017 warned musicians in the country against using nude video vixens, or posting sexually suggestive videos and pictures to their social media accounts.
Speaking on December 12 at a Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) parents’ conference in Dodoma, President Magufuli ordered Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) to take legal action against artistes using nude video vixens, or sharing to public platforms obscene content.
The Head of State further advised women against, what he termed as objectifying themselves in music videos.
“There are key moral values that we, as Tanzanian people, have been losing of late. The moral fabric is being eroded gradually. It is our responsibility, as the CCM parents’ welfare association, to speak out and correct matters, when immorality is taking over our daily activities, interactions and culture,” said President Magufuli.
“I am a big fan of good music, Tanzanian songs included. Every time I switch on my television set to watch music videos, the only people I see dancing clotheless in the music videos are women. You will hardly see men dancing naked in music videos. The furthest men will go with nudity is appearing shirtless in music videos so as to flaunt their muscular bodies. They want to show the world that they have six-pack abs; that’s all.
“But for women, not all though, leave very little to the imagination, when it comes to matters nudity. A majority of women enjoy posing nude. As the parents’ welfare association, it is time to call out those perpetrating such behaviour.
“Women, by posing nude, what are we teaching our children? We love music. But, must our women pose naked for the music videos to get views; and as a result, popularity? Does it mean that when a woman dances with clothes on, the music video won’t be enjoyable?
“Parents, it is time for us to return to Godly ways, and seek His intervention. Even Adam and Eve, according to the Bible, ran to cover their nakedness when they realised that they were exposing parts of their bodies that should not be seen by members of the public. In music videos, these women dance naked oblivious to the fact that they are flaunting their bodies in public domain. Fellow countrymen, it is time to protect our traditional Tanzanian culture, regardless our political inclination.”
