“For change to occur, then a price must be paid….it is for this reason that I commit suicide, so that you realise the fruits of justice. Through my death, all the student leaders that were denied their right of education must now be allowed to realise their ambitions and dreams. Through my death let Otunga and her group know that money can buy media but not the truth.”
Those were some of the words of University of Eldoret Students Governing Council (SGC) ex President Edgar Kagonya Kisanya who attempted suicide on Tuesday, September 5.
eDaily has learnt that Edgar was a student leader serving suspension and was set to appear before the University Senate.
Unconfirmed reports claim Mr Kisanya had threatened University management that he would kill himself if he would be suspended.
A student leader, who spoke to eDaily in confidence, asserted that Mr Kisanya had been summoned by the university senate, for among other reasons, inciting students to violence.
“I heard about Edgar’s suicide attempt yesterday (Tuesday) morning. We tried calling him at 7am before his phone went off at 9am. I only heard later in the day that he had been taken to Shida Hospital in Eldoret before his condition worsened. He was transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral hospital in Eldoret,” said the source.
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital CEO Dr. Wilson Aruasa confirmed that Mr Kisanya, who had posted a suicide note on a social media group, had attempted suicide.
“The patient whom we were told is a student at UoE was booked in this evening and was found to have injected himself with a poisonous drug. It is a parasuicide case ignited by his suspension from the University one month ago,” said Dr. Aruasa.
The CEO said Mr Kisanya, had injected himself with a poisonous substance but was resuscitated and is in stable condition.
According to the student leader who spoke to eDaily, Edgar’s suicidal thoughts were triggered by depression after he was suspended from varsity – and not a bid to fight for justice in the institution as his suicide note said.
