Director Wanuri Kahiu of banned Kenyan film ‘Rafiki’ now a member of Oscars Academy

Kenyan director and filmmaker, Wanuri Kahiu is among the 928 people who have been invited into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science.

In a bid to push for diversity, the Academy has invited 928 new members from 59 countries. This is after getting criticism from all across the world for only feting white and male members.

Other invited members include “Girls Trip” star Tiffany Haddish; “The Big Sick” co-writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon; as well as comedian and actor Dave Chappelle.

If all guests accept the invitation, the number of women and people of color would increase immensely. Female membership would increase from 28 to 31 percent, while people of color would increase from 13 to 16 percent.

Wanuri Kahiu took to twitter to gush over the glamorous invite saying, “I am so proud and happy.”

Her film, ‘Rafiki’  broke the internet when it became the first Kenyan film to showcase at the Cannes Festival in France.
