Budalangi fisherman dies after being trapped by fishing net

A middle-aged man from Mndekwe Ward in Bunyala West, Budalangi Constituency died Wednesday evening after he was trapped by a fishing net while working in Lake Victoria.

Kevin Okumu Ondiek, 37, dived into the water to untangle the loaded fishing net, but was trapped in it, leading to his drowning.

Confirming the incident, Bulemia Sub-Location assistant chief Mary Usiku, said Mr Ondiek’s body is yet to be retrieved from the lake.

“The deceased and his colleagues often dive into the water to either catch fish by themselves, or pull out the fishing nets, when they are stuck to something in the water,” said Ms Usiku.
