Miss Tanzania 2016/2017 Diana Edwards has claimed that her relatives recently abducted her in Sakina, Arusha and attempted to forcefully circumcise her.
Diana says she managed to free herself from their grip and ran away.
The beauty queen says many women her age, according to their tradition, have undergone the cut willingly or unwillingly, and her relatives were saying she had delayed transitioning from childhood to adulthood, based on their culture.
Diana, however, says the cultural practice is outdated.
“I have never thought of, or wanted to be genitally mutilated. When, I recently went home in Sakina, Arusha, my family members abducted me, and said I was going to be circumcised as our culture demands. I managed to run away. Sadly, some of my relatives maintain that when I would set foot home, they will ensure that I get circumcised. I cannot accept to be used to promote an obsolete cultural practice,” Diana, who hails from the Maasai community, told Tanzanian newspaper, Ijumaa.
Diana, a former Miss Kinondoni beauty, rose to national stardom when she won the coveted Miss Tanzania crown at an event held in Mwanza.
