The late Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Joseph Nkaissery breathed his last at around 1am Saturday at the Karen Hospital, his friend of 43 years, namely Francis Charles Mugambi, has told eDaily.
Mugambi, a security consultant at the Office of the President, recounts receiving a distressing phone call from one of the Interior CS’s security officers at 12:30am Saturday, informing him that the CS had become suddenly ill, and had been rushed to the Karen Hospital in critical condition after collapsing at his (Nkaissery’s) Karen home in Nairobi.
“The security officer asked me to make my way to the Karen Hospital urgently,” said Mugambi.
Mugambi joined Nkaissery’s wife, Hellen, and son, who had, alongside security officers, rushed the CS to the Karen Hospital.
“At around 1am, the doctor, who attended to the CS, was really kind; but he told us there is nothing they could do as the CS had already died,” said Mugambi.
Mugambi recounts informing one of the senior government officials about the tragic news at 2am, asking the official to convey the sad news to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Mugambi says before 5am Saturday, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and his two deputies arrived at the facility and embarked on moving Nkaissery’s body from the Karen Hospital to Lee Funeral Home.
“For the 43 years I have known Nkaissery, he is one of the fittest Kenyans we have ever had; he, routinely, went to the gym,” said Mugambi; as he expressed shock at the sudden demise of his longtime crony.
Mugambi says on the fateful Friday evening, he and other members of a security team, met with CS Nkaissery at a Bomas of Kenya social joint, where they held security briefings.
“Every time the CS was in Nairobi, it was a tradition for us to meet in the evenings for security briefings with a team,” said Mugambi.
After a section of the team had left, Mugambi and Nkaissery remained until 8:45pm, when they left for their respective homes.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary is reported to have gone home, where he had dinner with family as they watched the day’s news on a local television.
It is at home where he is said to have collapsed as he prepared to go to bed around 12 midnight. He was rushed to the Karen Hospital; reports indicating he died as doctors tried to resuscitate him.
