A somber mood has engulfed staff and inmates at the Maralal Prison after the facility’s assistant commissioner died at his home on Friday morning.
Commissioner Simon Musyoni’s driver found him lying unconscious on his bed, when he went to pick him up Friday 7am.
According to an officer, who sought anonymity as he is not authorised to talk to the press, Musyoni’s driver had come to pick the now-deceased up for a routine medical checkup in Nairobi.
Mr Musyoni had been allowed to stay away from work beginning Thursday, May 4, due to his deteriorating health.
The officer said Mr Musyoni had undergone a surgery six months ago following a complication in his blood vessels.
Mr Musyoni was rushed to Samburu County Referral Hospital, which is about a kilometer away – but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The 59-year-old was expected to retire on July, 2017 after serving at the Maralal Prison from 2011.
His body was moved to Samburu County Referral Hospital mortuary.
