Radio Jambo presenter Annitah Raey has opened up about her now-aborted marriage, which was marred by emotional and physical abuse five months into it.
The radio host was 19; fresh from secondary school, when she went into marriage.
She says she did not want to return to her mother’s home after completing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) because the two had protracted differences throughout her teenagehood.
“I completed secondary education in November and got married in December [that year] to a guy I thought would be the best husband ever. He was ten years older and, as I was young, I hoped marriage would be a bed of roses,” she told The Star.
Trouble began rocking Annitah Raey’s union five months into it, when she returned to her matrimonial home one evening and found another woman’s shoes at the doorstep.
“I got in the house, met my husband, his cousin and a lady in the bathroom showering. Of course, being the woman of that house, I decided to ask who the other woman was, but he slapped me, and that was the turning point in our marriage. For the first time I decided to call my parents but they did not help me,” she said.
Determined not to move into her parents’ house, Annitah Raey endured the physical and emotional abuse, which grew uglier by the day.
She, however, made up her mind one day, and walked out on her husband.
“He did not stop cheating. I, however, told myself that the marriage had to work. The longer I waited, the more violent he became. I received beatings, even with my first pregnancy. The emotional abuse was worse than the physical abuse and I had to walk away from that marriage. And the worst thing is that I left my son with him,” said Annitah Raey.
The radio presenter had, in a past interview with The Star, revealed that due to her fall-out with her mother, who was “harsh”, she went to live in the Nairobi streets when she was 13 years old.
Sadly, she was raped by two men during her days in the streets.
