Kenya’s top hip-hop rapper Andrew Karuku, alias Abbas Kubaff, has revealed why he made his wedding to Briton wife, Anna English, a secret.
Speaking to Citizen Digital on Saturday, Abbas said the union ceremony which took place in August 24th, 2015, was organised abruptly and there was no time to make it public.
Moreover, his wife did not want the wedding to be blown out to the media.
The two exchanged vows before about 30 guests; mostly family members and very close friends from the local music industry.
Among them was former K–South member Bamboo, fellow rapper Lon Jon (his best man), Capital FM’s DJ UV and Nigerian-based Kenyan artiste Kelmah Shikoh.
After the vows, a small ceremony of 100 guests followed at a luxury Diani spot with friends toasting to the couple’s new beginning.
Abbas says the nature of his wife’s job does not allow her to be all over the public sphere.
“I personally did not know I would wed so soon,” he told Citizen Digital.
“The wedding happened after we organised a family get-together from both ends. It is during the interaction by both families when we realised we could actually arrange the union.”
He added: “Since my wife is non-Kenyan, as families we agreed to seal the marriage before she flew back to Britain. She works over there.”
Abbas said getting to bring both families together was such a task due to geographical and time challenges.
“We had to take advantage of the get-together arranged in Kenya to conduct the wedding. We come from different countries (Britain and Kenya). The distance is such an inhibitor! If I had not wedded at that time when both families were here, I just don’t know when next I would have.”
He continued: “My wife’s family is very much occupied; mine too is. You know how it takes commitment, compromise and time sacrifice to arrange a wedding; it was only right to do the wedding when both families were present in one location – and that was in Kenya.”
Abbas wedded on the shores of the Indian Ocean in Diani, Mombasa.
The Baadaye rapper and his wife are blessed with a daughter.
This is Abbas Kubaff’s second wedding after holding a similar ceremony with his Australian ex-girlfriend Baby Gangsta in 2009. They had lasted for a few months.
