Budalangi Member of Parliament (MP) Ababu Namwamba was on Wednesday, June 14 booed off stage by residents of Bumala in Butula Constituency, where President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, took their campaign.
The Budalangi legislator had been invited to address the rally at Bumala Market by President Kenyatta but the gathering would have none of it.
On seeing Ababu Namwamba at Bumala Market, Uhuru said: “Before I wrap up my speech, considering we still have a long way to go on our tour of Busia County, I invite Ababu Namwamba, who has arrived here, to address you. (Crowd boos).”
A section of the gathering accused Namwamba of betraying the Luhya community by warming up to Jubilee administration, while others accused the legislator of lacking a political stance.
Following the anti-Namwamba chants, which were increasingly renting the air at Bumala Market, President Uhuru Kenyatta was forced to continue his speech.
“Okay, I understand it is your right to be addressed by whomever you wish. I will continue my address,” said President Kenyatta.
The Head of State in his Busia tour, urged area residents to shun politics of division.
“We, as Jubilee leadership, detest politics run on the basis of insult. I urge our competitors from the other camp (The National Super Alliance – NASA) to come up with a manifesto and an agenda for all Kenyans that will help the citizens make an informed decision on whether to vote for them or us on August 8. As leaders, we should not fuel hate, ethnicity and base our politics on insults. It is not beneficial to the nation,” said President Kenyatta.
After President Kenyatta and his convoy had left Bumala Market, Matayos and Mundika areas, supporters of NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga took to the streets to chant pro-NASA slogans.
