Thirty male street children in Isiolo Town were on Thursday, April 12 circumcised in an initiative conducted by the Ministry of Health in conjunction with other health stakeholders, Isiolo County Deputy Commissioner Otieno Okich says.
The street children, who gathered at the Isiolo Stadium, were taken to Isiolo District Hospital for the exercise. Led by their leader, Abdi Mohammed, the street children said they were grateful for the initiative.
Mr Mohammed said the move will help in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Mr Mohammed urged the Isiolo County Government to build them a centre, where they can be accommodated. He says the number of street children in the county has been increasing at an alarming rate.
The initiation exercise was organised to celebrate the International Day for Street Children, which is celebrated on April 12 every year.
